Unity is a game engine that is used for developing 3D applications for Visual Computing. However, only a few students have experiences in this field. In order to prepare the students to delve deeper into the art of Computer Visualizations, members of various SFB-TRR 161 projects came together and offered a Unity Crash Course at the University of Konstanz in October 2024.
Oliver Deussen (A01) and Carlos Pinheiro talked about the principles and fundamentals of VR and AR. Karsten Klein (A09) and Wilhelm Kerle-Malcharek (D04) covered the topic of Immersive Analytics in Life Science Informatics. Finally, Tiare Feuchtner (C07) and Abdelrahman Zaky (C07) gave insights into the basic concepts of Interaction in Mixed Reality. Niklas Gröne (D04) and Paulina Leutloff were teaching assistants who were always available to help quickly and competently in case of any upcoming questions or problems.
At the end of the week the 13 attendees had learned about
- Familiarization with the Unity 3D game engine:
- 3D game level design with materials, terrain, and lighting
- Object behavior scripting including trigger handling and physics simulation
(colliders, rigid bodies) - Input system (Unity, SteamVR
- Basic knowledge of interaction and navigation techniques in virtual environments
- Experience in development of VR applications for Meta Quest 2
and were able to develop a simple VR “Fruit Ninja” clone.
