After two successful editions of the workshop (2022 in Stuttgart and 2023 in Konstanz), the third edition took place in Munich. At the workshop on July 4, 2024, a diverse set of 49 researchers (not only females) from different universities and companies came together to discuss different financial aspects that play a role in a career in industry as well as in academia.

The key goal of the event was to build connections among the participating researchers. That is why we started with a welcome and then directly went on with a round of introductions such that the participants got to know more about each other.

We had four invited speakers who gave inspiring talks about their career paths in academia or industry and reflections on different financial aspects.

The first talk was given by Geraldine Fitzpatrick from TU Wien, who gave us many personal insights into her journey through different countries and her experiences when talking about money.

This talk was followed by a presentation by Kathrin Gerling from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She reflected on her academic journey and the role of research funding, including differences in different funding systems.

After a coffee break with many lively discussions, the second session featured two speakers from industry. First, Jie Lie from EPAM System provided insights into her path to industry and shared her experiences on finding the balance between research and running her own cake business.

The final speaker was Franziska Hämmerle from Google Zürich. In her talk, she provided helpful tips for designing a career that aligns with your values and provided many insights into the tech industry.

The talks were followed by group discussions, which provided a safe space to discuss any questions about many topics related to careers in computing. The event finished with a visit and lab tour organized by the Human-Centered Ubiquitous Media group of Albrecht Schmid at LMU Munich, which provided further room for exchange, networking, and discussions.

The Women* in Computing Workshop was supported by the SFB-TRR 161 and Humane AI Net, the European network of Human-Centered artificial intelligence. After a successful third event, a fourth edition is planned for 2025

See you all next year !
